Thank you for supporting Table from Japan.
Have you ever opened your pantry and found tiny bugs in your rice bag? Rice is actually a fresh food, and the way you store it at home makes a big difference.
I wanted to share a few simple habits that many Japanese home cooks use to keep rice fresh and tasting good. They are small things, but they can help your rice stay in better condition at home.
1. The Golden Rule: Store it in the Fridge
In Japan, many people keep rice in the fridge all year round if space allows.
Rice does not do well with heat and humidity. Keeping it cool helps it stay fresher for longer and can also help prevent pantry bugs.
If you have space, keep rice in a sealed container in the fridge.
The container I use fits a 5 kg bag of rice, which is convenient for our home because we usually finish 5 kg of rice in about a month.

2. Bring Out the Best with the Right Water
Even if you store your rice well, the water you use can still make a difference to the final result.
Rice cooks best with soft water. Since tap water in Australia can sometimes be quite hard, filtered water or bottled water can help improve the flavour and texture.
If you have time, let the rice soak for 30 to 60 minutes before cooking. This gives the water time to soak into the centre of each grain and helps the rice cook up soft and fluffy.
3. Choose the Right Bag Size
Instead of buying the biggest bag, it is often better to choose a size that suits how quickly you actually eat rice at home.
I usually try to buy a bag size that I can finish within about a month, so the rice stays as fresh as possible.
Rice is simple, but these small habits can help it taste better at home.
I hope they help you enjoy your rice a little more too.
