As a Japanese person living here, I've tried the options available at our local shops. Although they are both great, they each have their own strengths. Here is how I choose the right rice for my kitchen.
1. The Reliable All-Rounder: Supermarket Sushi Rice (Medium Grain)
The Australian-grown Medium Grain rice (often labeled as Sushi Rice) in local supermarkets is a very practical and high-quality option.
- The Texture: It has a good amount of stickiness and a mild, clean taste.
- Best For: Dishes with stronger flavours where the rice acts as a perfect base—like Japanese curry, hearty rice bowls (donburi), or fried rice.
2. The Quality Choice: Japanese Koshihikari
At Japanese grocery stores, you'll find varieties like Koshihikari. This is a short-grain rice, and the differences are:
- The Experience: It has a beautiful glossy shine, a deeper natural sweetness, and a gentle, comforting scent.
- Perfect for Bento: This rice is ideal for a lunch box because it is great at retaining moisture. While some types of rice can become a little firm or lose their tenderness as they cool, Koshihikari stays soft and springy. This is why it's my top choice for Rice balls (Onigiri) or when I enjoy Hand-roll Sushi (Temaki-zushi) with my family at home.

My "Hybrid Approach" to Rice
I don't believe you have to use expensive rice for everything. I switch between the two depending on what is on the menu:
- For Everyday Big Meals: I often use the Supermarket Medium Grain. It balances bold flavours perfectly, making it a smart and delicious choice for a rich curry or a savoury stir-fry.
- When Rice is the Star: I prefer Koshihikari. For a simple meal with miso soup, or any dish where you want to enjoy the pure flavour of the grain, the quality of the rice really stands out.
To be honest...
whenever I run out of Koshihikari—which happens quite often!—I just use Medium Grain for everything. It's all about being flexible and enjoying your meal.
I hope this guide helps you find the best rice for your next Japanese meal! By choosing your rice based on what you're cooking, you can enjoy authentic flavours while keeping your grocery budget in check.
